DR. SEF HERMANS
Sef Hermans is a Dutch trumpet player, teacher and academic. In 2006, he obtained a position as Tutti trumpet of the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra, and from the 2007/2008 season worked as principle trumpet. Following a stay with the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Osaka, he was hired by the University of Melbourne as a lecturer of trumpet, chamber music and 20th/21st Century Music History. He obtained his PhD in Performance at the University of Melbourne in 2018. His dissertation, “The Trumpeter Re-Conceived: An investigation of the creative and performative skills required in New Music Theatre works”, explored creative and collaborative processes in the creation of New Music Theater performances. In addition, he regularly participated in the Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music (BIFEM) in Victoria, Australia as a performer, soloist, and presenter, and is a member of the Argonaut Ensemble, the ensemble in residence of the BIFEM festival.
Currently, he is working as a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture and Design (ETSAUN) at the University of Navarra, where he teaches Creative and Performative Guide to Performance and Stage Design and Applied creative and performative processes in Architecture. He is a researcher at the Instituto Cultura y Sociedad (ICS) at the Universidad de Navarra (MUN), developing and researching multidisciplinary artistic processes. He also collaborates with the Performance Department at the Museo Universidad de Navarra as a curator and creator of new programs and performances. He is a founding member of Farout, an association for performative research, comprised of performers, creators, and researchers dedicated to New Music performances and performative research. Sef is awaiting publication of his article “Silencio the co-creation of a New Music Theatre piece” in Forum+ the pre-eminent peer reviewed journal of artistic research in Belgium and the Netherlands. The article is the research-outcome of a solo performance for trumpet-actor co-created with researcher and composer Falk Hübner, which premiered at the Museo Universidad de Navarra in their Cartografias de la Musica in 2018. Together with other members of Farout, and in collaboration with the Museo Universidad de Navarra, Sef is currently working on a new performance, Telescope II, scheduled to take place at the MUN in April 2021
